First HPE Lesson
Taught the HPE lesson last Thursday at Tamahere, Really happy with how it went down.
Second HPE Lesson
The second lesson was held outside this time rather than in the TCC. This was great, the area was next to the class and the transition from class to court was smooth and trouble free, the class was excited to be going outside to do their PE lesson. The weather was bright and beautiful and this seemed to improve their attitudes. the lesson began as the last one did with the traffic light game ( they really like this). Natasha was the leader of this game this time the only negative to doing this is the voice trvels worse in an outdoor area and some instructions were difficult to hear.
Her instruction before the activity started were good, with the children having to repeat the instruction back to her. they really understood what was happening in the game and were totally engaged.
Before the jumprope lesson began we reviewed the skills we worked at in the previous lesson and some of the things they needed to watch and work on, we did this individually but it was evident through what was happening we were both doing this. Refering back to the rope measuring and how to hold the rope and correcting where necessary.
The activities were moving well and skills were progressing with some assistance, when it got near the end we each took different activities from the plan and Natasha used the big rope jumping and I went for the skipping relay which went like this:
Third HPE Lesson
Taught the HPE lesson last Thursday at Tamahere, Really happy with how it went down.
The
transition from class to space which is the community center went well.
We walked over with them knowing different instruction were going to
come on the style of walking they would have to do. We started by normal
walking with hands behind back then transitioned into a duck walk, they
were quiet because they knew thay had to listen to change walk type we
went to cats and monkeys before arriving at the TCC.
Warm up was the same warm up I did with part of the class in tutorials. The traffic light game.
This
was where they must get to the end of the hall by changing movements on
the Green and Orange and stopping on the red.
The activity was a huge success and the children were engaged and thinking/listening the whole time, which was nice. The Class was a s a whole for this part of the lesson so I lead and Natasha and Christine(the class teacher) observed this.
They were excited to have an input into what movements we could do on these colours. The children were really involved and sensible with their ideas as to what we can change the movements too, going from running to skipping to hopping and running like a tiger, all really good ideas that we could implement.
We moved from there to the skipping or jumprope instruction. The activity was a huge success and the children were engaged and thinking/listening the whole time, which was nice. JUMP
ROPE RELAY
We will need one jump rope per
Team...Divide class into groups of 4-5.
The groups line up in a line
behind a leader.
The first player of each group
runs to their jump rope-which is placed at the halfway line of one of
the other lines marked on the court in front of each group. They then do 1-5
jumps and run back to the group. The first group finished is the winner.
We each did different activities from the plan so we could assess them as ways to end a lesson like this and get an idea of what we can do differently. Having a short amount of time to teach, it made sense to each do a different activity and review it with each other later. both activities had their merit and the relay was fun but the children at 5-6 years old did stand around for a time while waiting for their turn. They were very interested in how each member of their team was doing and whether or not they would win the relay. The competition side of this was great and spurred them on. they were allowed to use a modified skipping style if needed to make it fair and account for all the differences in ability.

Teaching sequence
Introduction: Play traffic lights with children to warm up, having children
skipping without skipping ropes as part of one style of movement to get
through the green light. Orange light
movement = hoping and right left movement = crouched in a ball.
|
Main body of lesson
Recap on last two lesson.
Have children get their skipping ropes and skip to the end of
the hall and back, do this several times in order to allow the children that
are struggling to have extra time to make it across the hall at least twice
(allowing those children extra help if wanted).
Change the type of skipping now to feet together skipping but
still moving across the hall.
Have two children hold the large skipping rope and have children
running through the skipping rope, for those children struggling or unsure of
running through a moving skipping rope, hold the rope still and get the child
to stand by the rope and when it starts to move have the children run.
Once the children have successfully accomplished this have the
children skip freely with the large skipping rope counting how many jumps
they can make before they stop.

|
Wrap up
Congratulate everyone on their efforts and warm down with some
stretches. Ensure that everyone has
left their skipping rope in a nice straight line with all the others.

Observation of Children (formative assessment)
Note: Assess the learning described in the SLOs
& use the observations chart
There has been much improvement over much of the class since we have last seen them, they are more confident and not so afraid to try in this environment.
The Traffic light game is still a winner and is asked for, we saw no need to change it too much at this stage, but don't want them to get sick of it too. a new game may need to be brought in to mix it up.
There are still a huge range of different ability levels and styles of jumping going on but this is getting better with each lesson.
I feel that with more instruction and more consistant skipping/jump rope education the class will be leping ahead in skill and confidence.

Evaluation of Lesson
Great lesson all round, I could see that both groups have been progressing well and enjoying their skipping. I am proud of our efforts and the effoert and energy the children put in too.
Well done to all.
